SHIFT NC (Sexual Health Initiatives for Teens)
SHIFT NC, formerly the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina (APPCNC) is a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve adolescent and young adult sexual health. SHIFT NC led a coalition of agencies to pass the 2009 Healthy Youth Act (HYA), which requires that schools offer factually accurate instruction in contraception, STI/HIV prevention, and sexual violence prevention. After the law’s passage and prior to joining WISE, SHIFT NC worked to help schools understand the requirements of the new law, bringing workshops and comprehensive curriculum training to school systems throughout the state. Since joining WISE in 2011, SHIFT NC has focused on institutionalizing sex education in North Carolina public schools by helping school systems and schools assess their capacity, update policies and procedures, build an internal culture that is supportive of adolescent health, and gain the training and technical assistance needed to fully implement exemplary sex education. SHIFT NC is also partnering with other key stakeholders, including state agencies and community groups, to provide stronger environmental support for school-based sex ed statewide.
